Living Green,Teaching Green
We will work to become a model of sustainability and care for the natural environment for ourselves, our Nicaraguan friends and neighbors, and other educational institutions. Our commitment to sustainable practices is an important part of our “Statement of Social Responsibility.”
We will work to achieve environmentally positive practices in our daily lives and work. We are developing and implementing a “Green Strategy for Casa Xalteva” that includes recycling, energy conservation, use of renewable energy sources, water conservation and proper waste management, reduction of our carbon footprints, support for community environmental projects, and responsible stewardship of our land and resources.
Our Green Agenda
- Practice recycling of as many waste materials as possible, and phase out the use of the most harmful materials such as plastic bottles and bags
- Develop alternative energy sources for Casa Xalteva, including solar, wind and alternative fuels
- Eliminate discharge of waste water or other toxic substances into the streets, rivers and lakes of our community
- Seek out and use sustainable and renewable construction materials that do not contribute to the destruction of vulnerable and irreplaceable resources
- Promote organic gardening and grow or buy locally produced foods and other products whenever possible
- Develop a reforestation project that will allow our students and visitors to plant trees in order to offset their carbon footprints and the harmful impacts of their ground, sea and air travel
- Practice and promote responsible eco-tourism in all of our programs
