Casa Xalteva

Mission

Our Mission is to promote the ideals of peace, understanding, social justice, and care for the natural environment.  Our Spanish language programs aim to foster respect, sensitivity, and cultural exchange through education in language, culture, history, and political-social-economic life of Nicaragua. Our Childrens' Program strives to create productive adults by providing kids with educational and recreational activities in a safe, positive learning environment.

From the beginning, a core goal of Casa Xalteva has been to provide Nicaraguan children the tools they need to become responsible, productive adults who can help positively influence their families, communities, and country.  We are committed to assisting children achieve their goals with educational, emotional, and monetary support.

At the most basic level we provide a safe, positive environment for children to spend their free time.  In the local communities children rarely have structured, supervised activities such as organized sports and clubs and poverty- burdened families sometimes provide little support.  We are an alternative to the streets, where many children spend time because for them there is no place else to go.

We also promote successful development through our educational program.  Our children spend every morning in Casa Xalteva before going to school in the afternoon.  What they receive includes: breakfast and lunch; tutoring in Spanish, English, math, reading, and writing; group building activities; art projects; music; and sports.  The varied curriculum helps reinforce subjects taught in school, introduce entirely new experiences, and foster team building and leadership skills.  One of the requirements the kids have for staying in our program is staying in school.

We are committed to providing long-term support for our kids, up through higher education if they have the interest and abilities to pursue it.  In the past we have provided scholarships for high school and university study to several students who came to Casa Xalteva in its first years of operation.  One of those students has already completed a university degree and returned to Casa Xalteva as a Spanish teacher.

Our future goals include expanding our kids program, providing more scholarships for high school and unversity education, developing a new scholarship program for our students to study in other countries, and establishing year-round English language classes in Granada for low-come children, youth and adults.
