Educational Shelter
From the beginning a core goal of Casa Xalteva has been to provide Nicaraguan children
the tools they need to become responsible, productive adults that can help positively
influence their families, communities, and country. We are committed to assist children
achieve their goals with educational, emotional, and monetary support.
At the most basic level we provide a safe, positive environment for children to spend their
free time. In the local communities children rarely have structured, supervised activities such
as organized sports and clubs and poverty- burdened families provide little support. We are an
alternative to the streets, where many children spend time because for them there is no place
else to go. Giving the students healthy and productive group activities keeps them off the
streets, where many kids fall prey to begging, glue-sniffing, and sexual exploitation.
We also work hard to teach them the values of working cooperatively with others, team work,
non-violence, and tolerance. Their involvement with international students and volunteers from
other countries gives them an international and intercultural awareness that they can help
instill in their families, schools and communities.
We also promote successful development through our educational program. Our children spend
every morning in Casa Xalteva before going to school in the afternoon. What they receive
includes: breakfast and lunch; tutoring in Spanish, English, math, reading, and writing;
group building activities; art projects; music; and sports. The varied curriculum helps
reinforce subjects taught in school, introduce entirely new experiences, and foster team
building and leadership skills.
For secondary school students we also
offer an afternoon program that teaches English as a Foreign Language and
Computer courses. Casa Xalteva's Spanish language students are welcome to
participate in all of our kids programs as volunteer tutors and teachers
aides.
