Global Scholarship Fund
One of our most important functions at Casa Xalteva is keeping children and young people going to school. Over the years we have awarded hundreds of scholarships to poor but deserving students who might not otherwise have been able to stay in school. At the elementary and secondary school level we help children with uniforms, school supplies, and fees. We pay the university tuition and books and materials fees for Casa Xalteva teachers and staff, as well as for other students who need assistance. Our scholarship funds are provided from income from our Spanish language programs and also from contributors in many different countries. About Elba: Elba is a 18-year old single mother with two children who makes a living by walking around the market selling natural juice in a bag. Until recently Elba lived in Granada with her mother and daughters, but they had to move in with a relative in San Marcos (a town 1 hour away), due to increasing rents in Granada. Now Elba makes the hour commute daily to sell juice. She is also attending English classes every Saturday in Granada and has recently been receiving free classes offered by a volunteer here. Besides her English studies, Elba has also been studying basic computer skills with the hope that she could find a better paying and less physically demanding job.

About Luis: Luis comes from an artisan family and ives with his 4 siblings and parents in San Juan de Oriente - a town where 97% of the Nicaragua's ceramics are made. Luis' family makes a living by making and selling ceramics. He has shown an interest in speaking English and his family has very high expectetions for him. His parents hope Luis can help them grow their little family-owned business through his English and computer skills.

He is also taking a conversational English class at Casa Xalteva.
