Overview

Casa Xalteva's Spanish Language School is a program of Fundacion Casa Xalteva, an independent non-profit educational and charitable foundation supported by Communitas Foundation, chartered in the state of New Mexico, USA. In addition to providing high-quality Spanish instruction, our purpose is to promote international and intercultural awareness and cooperation among all peoples. Our Spanish Language School in Granada Nicaragua welcomes students of all ages, backgrounds and nationalities. Working with Nicaraguans from a variety of backgrounds, we hope to share awareness of the Spanish language and the rich culture of Nicaragua with people from North America, Europe, Asia, and other parts of the world.

Casa Xalteva offers short and long-term intensive Spanish courses for beginning, intermediate and advanced students. Classes Clase en Casa Xalteva consist of one to four students working with Nicaraguan instructors. The average class size is two students per class. Classes meet four hours a day Monday through Friday. The atmosphere is casual and the emphasis is on conversational skills. Textbooks and materials designed for non-native speakers are provided. Our instructors use an innovative "Spanish only" technique that has students speaking, writing and reading the language from the first day of class.New classes begin every Monday throughout the year, and students may study for as little as one week or as long as several months.

We are committed to offering the highest quality of language instruction, educating our students about the culture and society of Nicaragua, building lasting relationships between our students and the people of Nicaragua, and providing meaningful opportunities for volunteer and social service work.

Casa Xalteva Faculty

All of our teachers are young, native Spanish-speakers, who are well-trained in working with international students. They are either college graduates or working on college degrees while they teach at Casa Xalteva. Most have several years of experience as teachers. All of our teachers know some English, but most are not fluent. We discourage our teachers from using any English or other non-Spanish languages in the classroom, even with beginning students. While that may sound frightening, our long experience has shown us that even beginning students learn much faster if they are totally immersed in the language and do not fall back on their English when they have problems understanding. If you have to ask a question in English, your teachers will probably respond in Spanish, and if you still don’t understand they will try to find ways to communicate the answer to you. The first few days you may find that frustrating, but you will be amazed at how quickly you learn to get by without using your native language. Trust us on this.
