Contribute
As a small educational non-profit, Casa Xalteva practically lives week by week to cover program costs and operational costs. Thankfully, our overhead is fairly low, but our program costs have continued to increase along with our Children’s Program. While we have been getting on, low seasons are particularly slow and saving for large projects is very difficult.

Children’s Scholarship
All children in our Children’s Program receive financial aid from Casa Xalteva that completely covers the cost of school in Nicaragua. The expenses include registration fees, test fees, uniform fees, and school supplies. On average, we pay $100 per year for each of the 13 children in Casa Xalteva program. Sponsor a child for a year: ($100)
Lunch Program
Everyday Casa Xalteva is feeding more than 20 people at lunch time; 12 kids, 9 professors, and 2 workers (no including the administrative staff). It is an important component of our Children’s Program and part of a family work environment for our professors from the beginning. With the increase of children and professors, the cost of lunch food has also gone up. We currently allot $125 per week for our lunch, which is prepared by Juan Carlos’ wife, Olma. Sponsor lunch for a week: ($125)
Breakfast Program
In Nicaragua, many people do not eat breakfast. The same was true for most of the children in our program. Every morning we prepare a simple, but healthy breakfast of milk and bread for the children, with special breakfasts on Friday’s. We currently allot $25 per week for our breakfast program. Sponsor breakfast for a month: ($100)
Higher Education Scholarships
Besides our children program at Casa Xalteva, we provide scholarships to ambitious and promising children, teenagers, and/or young adults to continue their education in whatever their level may be (Primiry school, high school, university, and technical education such as Accounting and English as a second language (ESL) programs. Sponsor scholarship for one month ($30) or one academic year ($300)
Gregory Nevala Calvert University Scholarship
In honorof our late co-founder, we have started a scholarship fund to provide funding for a promising Nicarguan student to study at a U.S. university on the condition that he or she returns to Nicaragua to help build a better society. We are currently raising funds to send our lead Spanish teacher, Bismarck Gutierrez, to the U.S. to study English and work on a Master's degree. Sponsor a Nicaragua student for a year ($15,000) or contribute toward an endowment to fund this scholarship permanently (Any amount welcome).
English Language Scholarship
Casa Xalteva currently provides scholarships for ESL programs to 6 young individuals. Sponsor a scholarship for ne month ($20) or a year ($240).
Wish List
In addition to helping sponsor any part of our programs we are always trying to allocate money to the needs of Casa Xalteva. For instance, recently we received a $100 donation for a new industrial style stove to replace the old one. Olma, Juan Carlos’ wife and our cook, now spends 1 hour cooking lunch instead of 3. Her job is easier and we are buying much less gas, which costs $15 per tank. The investment will pay for itself within the year.
Photocopy Machine
Every week we spent time and money collecting materials to be photocopied and hauling them to the nearest copy center where we pay for copies. Like the stove, a photocopier would allow us to save time, money, and energy for something that is a basic part of the school’s operation. Contribute towards a photocopier
New Roof
This fall we replaced the entire roof for Casa Xalteva, which was an
enormous and expensive project. Although we had some contributions and used volunteer labor as much as possible, we still incurred several thousand
dollars in debts for materials and labor, which we must pay back. Donations
at any level are welcome. Donate Towards the Roof Project.
Casa Xalteva Mini-Van
For many years we used our 1985 VW Vanagon to pick up students at the
airport, do excursions, and take our kids on outings to the beach, but sadly
we have worn it out. We now have to rent vehicles or pay drivers for all of
our transportation needs. Contribute toward the purchase of a new mini-van.
